News You Might Have Missed: Week 12
You’ve made it to the end of Week 12! Give yourself a pat on the back, ignore your upcoming exams, and catch up with the news you might have missed in the last week.
ANU
ANU, in partnership with the ABC, has broken the record for ‘most people stargazing at multiple venues’. On Wednesday night, 40 000 people gathered across Australia for 10 minutes to look at the stars, smashing ANU’s previous record of 7960, set in 2015.
The Bachelor of Western Civilisation has been back in the news, as The Australian renewed debate on the ANU’s proposed partnership with the Ramsay Centre. The topic was even mentioned in Question Time at Parliament, with Minister for Environment and Energy Josh Frydenberg scornfully quoting ANUSA President Eleanor Kay. Observer obtained this quote when it first reported on the degree in March.
ANUSA
Disarm ANU, supported by ANUSA and the NUS, began their campaign to get ANU to cut ties with weapons manufacturing companies by holding a planning meeting on Friday. The group is planning further action next Semester.
Fossil Free ANU also took action this week, dropping an eight metre banner from the Baldessin carpark. This was done in advance of Vice Chancellor’s forum on ‘Investing in Change: Transitioning to a Low Carbon Economy’ happening on 30 May. Divesting from fossil fuels was endorsed by ANUSA in SRC 3. Fossil Free ANU aims to have the university divest from all assets in coal, oil and gas.
ANUSA will be holding its ‘Less Stresstival’ this week. Events are occuring throughout the week, including a screening of Spirited Away, bubble soccer, and yoga. More information can be found on ANUSA’s Facebook page.
